The problem with time blocking

As I have written about before, I’m a big proponent of time blocking.

I’ll schedule out my days and weeks in advance and it helps me stay on top of everything and juggle multiple projects or businesses at a time.

Depending on what I have going on at the time, my time blocks may be by the hour, 30 minutes or sometimes even 15 minute blocks.

The only problem I run into with time blocking though is when I have a lot of smaller tasks that need to be done. I find if I try to schedule these in say 15 minute blocks on my calendar, I’ll take the full 15 minutes to do the task, when in fact it could be done in less than 5 minutes.

In these situations, I will schedule say an hour to focus on smaller tasks for a particular project. In that hour, I’ll work through my task list and do as much as I can to close the list out.

I’ll also schedule 30-60 minutes per day for tasks. This is for the day to day tasks that need to be done but don’t warrant having a full time block allocated to them.

Time blocking is great, but you have to make it work for you. There is no point doing it if you get overwhelmed by it or if you are filing your schedule with blocks that don’t really deserve the time you are giving them.

If you do time block your days and weeks, make sure you’re assessing how it’s working for you and fine tune the process that you use to ensure it’s making you more productive.
